The Role of Instinct in Emergency Medicine

Instinct is not guesswork. It’s experience, compressed.

In emergencies, instinct often kicks in before conscious thought:

  • The subtle change in breathing

  • The shift in skin tone

  • The “something’s wrong” feeling you can’t explain

I use instinct in my fiction to:

  • Foreshadow danger

  • Reveal character depth

  • Build tension

  • Show the invisible skills nurses carry

Instinct saves lives — and it drives plot.
