Behind Closed Doors: The Untold Stories of Nursing Home Life

My second book "Terror at the Manor" is a work of fiction but is based on TRUE life occurrences in long-term care or nursing homes. Death, abuse, terror, errors, falls, violence and more.

When people think of nursing homes, they often picture peaceful hallways and gentle caregivers. But as someone who spent years working in long term care facilities, I can tell you there's a whole other world that exists behind those sterile walls - one filled with drama, heartbreak, and yes sometimes genuine horror that would make any thriller writer's imagination pale in comparison.

The Heroes you never hear about:

The good news is: 99% of staff are excellent, committed and professional. To me, they are absolute heroes. They work hard, are usually short staffed, and often go way above their job descriptions.

I've seen colleagues stay after their shift to hold the hand of a dying resident so they don't die alone. I've seen colleagues cry with families because they feel the loss of the resident almost as much as the family, because residents become your family.

I've seen staff come in on their only day off to pick up a shift because a colleague is sick, so that the floor is not understaffed. And as a result, they suffer physically, emotionally and psychologically.

Drama:

Nursing homes are full of drama, whether we like it or not. Staff are stretched. Residents are very ill, and need constant comfort and care. The challenges are endless, the restrictions profound.

It can be a perfect storm, despite best efforts and tons of regulations.
